Last year I wrote one of the most widely read and influential articles in the history of First Things magazine, “The Three Worlds of Evangelicalism.” This article gave a framework to explain changes in the way secular society has viewed Christianity over the past 60s years. And it used this framework as a backdrop for explaining the different groups within American evangelicalism, and why they are coming into conflict.
My framework divides the period since the mid-century high water mark of church attendance and softly institutionalized Christianity into three phases I call the positive, the neutral, and the negative worlds:
Positive World (1964-1994). Society at large retains a mostly positive view of Christianity. To be known as a good, churchgoing man or woman remains part of being an upstanding citizen in society. Publicly being a Christian enhances social status. Christian moral norms are still the basic moral norms of society, and violating them can lead to negative consequences.
Neutral World (1994-2014). Society takes a neutral stance toward Christianity. Christianity no longer has privileged status, but nor is it disfavored. Being publicly known as a Christian has neither a positive nor a negative impact on social status. Christianity is one valid option among many within a pluralistic, multicultural public square. Christian moral norms retain some residual effect.
Negative World (2014-Present). In this era, society has an overall negative view of Christianity. Being known as a Christian is a social negative, particularly in the higher status domains of society. Christian morality is expressly repudiated and now seen as a threat to the public good and new public moral order. Holding to Christian moral views, publicly affirming the teachings of the Bible, or violating the new secular moral order can lead to negative consequences.
I have taken this article and turned it into a forthcoming book called Life in the Negative World: Confronting Challenges in an Anti-Christian Culture.
This book expands and refines the three worlds framework, updates my analysis of the evangelical world, and puts forth a set of ideas for beginning to figure out how to live in the unprecedented Negative World, where for the first time in the 400 year history of the country, official, elite culture views Christianity negative.
I am very pleased that people like Rod Dreher, R. R. Reno, and Andrew Brunson, the pastor who as unjustly imprisoned for two years in Turkey starting in 2016, endorsed the book.
The book’s release date is January 30th. As we approach that date and beyond, I am going to be talking a lot about the book as I work to maximize the impact it has in the world.
I need your help with that today.
It’s very important for a the success of the book that it gets as many pre-orders as possible. This affects things like how many copies Amazon decides to stock in its warehouses and what sales rank the book launches with. Strong pre-orders tell retailers that they should make sure to stock plenty of copies and promote it themselves.
So I need all of you to pre-order a copy for yourself or others. You can do that at NegativeWorldBook.com.
If you go to that page to do your pre-order, you will get several free pieces of bonus material.
The publisher will send you the first two chapters of the book right now, so you can start reading today.
You will get a free e-book copy of my highly rated modern English translation and adaptation of John Owen’s Puritan classic, The Mortification of Sin. I normally charge $4.99 for this.
You will get a brand new one page graphic of the timeline of the three worlds and other things I discuss in my book.
I know you’ll want to read the book anyway, but these free bonuses make pre-ordering now more than worth it.
I also want to directly say: I need each one of you to pre-order this book, because that’s critical to its success and impact.
This is the first time ever I’m asking all of you, my readers, to take action to support what I’m doing. I don’t expect everyone to become a paid subscriber or support me in ways like that. As I said, just by being a free reader you already helped me get the book deal in the first place by showing that I had a large reader base.
But to really make this book a success and see it have a big impact in the world, I need your pre-orders.
For those who are brand new subscribers - this is not for you. Spend some time reading my work, and then when you’ve seen the value, order the book. If you are in my Member program, pre-orders are certainly nice, but I’m pre-ordering on your behalf to send you the free, autographed copy I promised.
