I suggest that there still IS an American story, but those who desire to control it refuse to include new chapters, and have edited out stories of those on the margins who provided the labor to generate the wealth for the authors of their American romantic novel. Those who yearn for recognition for their own culture/identity have needed to clamor for it themselves because they were erased, or misrepresented in a narrative that could be much more inclusive, educational and inspiring. Those who think we "hate America" are wrong. We hate that too many Americans will not accept our country's failings and faults WITH our incredible and laudable aspirations. We who have been excluded have asked politely, and then had to demand to be included in the on-going story of this beautiful, yet imperfect experiment. We are mis-judged by others, thinking we reject the same common values - but that is manufactured antipathy serving nefarious actors - international and domestic - who delight in our demise. We are not the enemy, as accused.
What alternate universe are you typing from? The stories of the marginalized and the failures of the United States to live up to its ideals are regular topics of discussion in public school history classes, academia, etc.
