Other Takes on the Three Worlds of Evangelicalism

For those who didn’t read it, be sure to check out my First Things piece on the three worlds of evangelicalism that’s generating a big discussion.

Doug Wilson posted a nice interaction with my piece. I would agree that their model has a lot of applicability to the “negative world.” In fact, I touted that in newsletter #43, and have used them in multiple recent presentations. I classify them as positive world/culture war primarily because they operate in a high conflict mode. Their social network “Fight, Laugh, Feast” puts it best. Fighting is core to their identity.

The Colson Center’s Breakpoint podcast also had a nice segment about it with very interesting perspectives. Their observation on the strategy framing I used for the piece is accurate, but comes from my management consulting rather than evangelical background. I’d agree more theological takes are needed, but I’m not a theologian. I always say I provide one way to look at things, not the only way. We’d all benefit from a variety of perspectives.

The Benham Brothers also included it in their podcast. They had signed a deal for a show on HGTV but were cancelled for their conservative Christian views. This happened in 2014, right as the negative world was starting. So they know about it from first hand experience.

Gene Veith at Patheos wrote a big follow-up post about my piece that’s managed to garner of 300 comments. Mark Galli (subscribe to his free Substack) also highlighted it. So did the nice aggregator Real Clear Religion and John Fea’s Current.

Please do spread my First Things piece on the three worlds far and wide. It is a very important article that provides an important map of the new territory we now inhabit.
