Love this breakdown of the times. It seems a little overly Protestant to make a case that says this new thing only has a parallel in the early church. Have you thought abut other periods and places in the history of the church where they went from positive or neutral world to a negative world. What sort of institutions, evangelical strategies, or discipleship modes did they employ?

I'm sure there are many other places and times of persecution or negative pressure on the church, and probably much to learn from all of them. I have not studied them however. I included the bit about Paul because I did a bit of study about him for a dive into 2 Timothy. But I would certainly not limit it to that.

You bet. Well, I'm sure there is a lot we'll be drawing on in the future we didn't think applied to us. I also wondered if this three-fold concept is speaking to or correcting Niebuhr's conceptions in Christ and Culture? I haven't studied it since seminary 20 years ago but my profs echoed Niebuhr's point first made in 1956. Christ for Culture = Bad, Christ against culture = Bad, Christ and culture in paradox = good.
